The Chinese elm (Ulmus parvifolia) is a prized species in the world of bonsai for its elegant silhouette and versatility.
Its small, oval, glossy green leaves, typically measuring between 1 and 3 cm, provide dense and harmonious foliage, perfect for meticulous shaping.
Resistant and adaptable, this semi-evergreen tree (which can become deciduous in cold climates) thrives equally well in bright indoor settings or sheltered outdoor areas, with remarkable tolerance to temperature variations. Its rapid growth allows enthusiasts to prune and shape it easily.

Description

Chinese Elm Bonsai / Ulmus Parvifolia, 8 years old

Height of the tree: 26 cm

Height of the tree with the pot: 32 cm

Circumference of the nebari (root collar): 9.2 cm

Characteristics

Tree with semi-evergreen foliage. It belongs to the Ulmaceae family.

Originating from Asia, this tree is highly appreciated for the color of its small green leaves, its rapid growth that allows it to be shaped according to your desires, and, as it ages, the aesthetic of its cracked bark gives it an unmatched charm.

Exposure

The Chinese elm is a tree to be placed outdoors, preferably in full sun. In the height of summer, favor a half-shade, half-sun exposure. Although it can be kept indoors in front of an abundant light source and away from a heat source (radiator), it resists cold well but should be protected at temperatures below -5°C.

Watering

Abundant in summer and moderate in winter, it is recommended to wait until the substrate is dry before watering it again.

Pruning

Structural pruning is generally done at the end of autumn when it has lost its leaves. The elm is a fast-growing tree; green pruning or pinching is carried out during the growth period. You will notice that it quickly transitions from a so-called green branch to brown, indicating that the branch is turning into wood, at which point it’s time to cut it back so it buds further back.

Fertilizer

From spring to autumn with liquid or solid fertilizer, chemical or organic, according to your preference.

Repotting

The elm is repotted approximately every two years. Repotting is usually done in spring when the buds begin to swell. We recommend a draining substrate such as akadama or an akadama-pumice mix.

Particularity

In the maritime industry, when boats are made of wood, it is not uncommon to find that elm wood is used for its strength.
