The Japanese Black Pine (Pinus thunbergii) is an excellent choice for bonsai due to its robustness, ability to withstand frequent pruning, and textured bark that ages beautifully, giving an ancient and authentic appearance. Description

Japanese Black Pine plant.

Height of the tree with pot: 22 cm

Characteristics

Vergreen tree with foliage called needles. It belongs to the conifer family because its fruit, the pine cone, has a cone shape.

Native to Japan, it typically grows along coastlines.

Exposure

This is a tree we recommend placing outdoors in full sun all year round.

Watering

Pines require controlled watering. Excess water is fatal for it, especially if the substrate is not well-draining. During heavy rain, we recommend bringing it into a greenhouse or slightly tilting its pot to drain excess water.

Pruning

Major pruning is done in winter, during the coldest time of the year. Green pruning, known as pinching, takes place during the expansion of spring buds. At this time, candles should be pinched and twisted depending on their vigor: the strongest candles should be pinched and reduced by about two-thirds, medium candles should be pinched and reduced by half, while the weakest candles are left untouched.

Fertilizer

You can provide fertilizer from spring to autumn. It is preferable to use organic fertilizer, which promotes and preserves mycorrhizae (fungi living in symbiosis with the tree).

Repotting

Every three years, during the growth of the candles and before the appearance of new needles. We recommend a highly draining substrate, such as pumice.

Particularity

In Japan, this pine is considered masculine. Its vigor, the texture of its cracked bark, the dark color of its needles, and their stiffness give it this character.
