Description

7-year-old Domestic Apple Bonsai (Malus Domestica).

Height of the tree: 31cm

Height of the tree with the pot: 37cm

Circumference of the nebari (base): 15cm

Characteristics

Deciduous tree (loses its leaves in winter). It belongs to the Rosaceae family.

Native to Europe, it is highly valued for its small flowers and small fruits that rarely exceed 2 cm.

Exposure

The domestic apple tree easily adapts to all types of climates. It is best to expose it to full sun throughout the year, except during very hot periods when it should be moved to a partially shaded area. It is quite resistant to frost, but it is advisable to protect it from temperatures below -2 °C.

Watering

Abundant in summer and moderate in winter. During flowering, avoid watering the flowers, as this could cause them to wilt quickly, which would diminish the charm of your bonsai.

Pruning

Structural pruning is generally carried out in late autumn or late winter before the sap begins to rise. Green pruning or pinching, on the other hand, is done during the growth period from June until the end of autumn.

Fertilizer

From spring to autumn, use fertilizer—either liquid or solid, chemical or organic, depending on your preference.

Repotting

Repotting is done every 2 or 3 years, depending on the condition of the substrate and the water drainage through the pot. We recommend a well-draining substrate such as akadama, an akadama-pumice mix, or a zeolite-chabasite mix.

Particularity

Following the abundant blooming of the apple tree, it develops small apples that transition through various colors from green to yellow and finally red. These have been cherished by humans since ancient times. However, for the sake of your tree’s energy, we recommend removing most of the fruits to avoid overly weakening the tree, as fruit production in a bonsai requires considerable energy.
